New Bedford Ballet Announces Performance of Sleeping Beauty

(New Bedford) The School of the New Bedford Ballet will be performing their premiere of Sleeping Beauty, its 24th annual full-length ballet, at the Zeiterion Theatre on Saturday, June 11th, at 2PM and 8PM.

In 1890 choreographer Marius Petipa premiered The Sleeping Beauty ballet at the Marinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. One hundred and twenty-one years later, this ballet has been restaged by New Bedford Ballet artistic director, Rebecca Waskiel-Marchesseault, and will feature guest artist, Alexander Akulov, who resided and danced in St. Petersburg before joining Festival Ballet Providence five years ago. Filled with the romantic notion of goodness and a captivating characterization of evil, the New Bedford Ballet's Sleeping Beauty is an enchanting and sometimes whimsical interpretation of this classic fairytale, and is guaranteed to transport the audience into a magical world straight out of a beautifully illustrated story book. Original choreography by Ms. Waskiel-Marchesseault and New Bedford Ballet instructors James Brown, Lauren Knightly and Alivia Cram, enable New Bedford Ballet students, ranging in age from five to eighteen years, to cast their own enchanting spells over the audience and bring the pages of this timeless story to life.

Six graduating seniors from the South Coast region are featured in the performance. The story of good and evil is embodied throughout the ballet by the scheming Carabosse, danced by ORR senior Emily Bungert, and her virtuous adversary, the Lilac Fairy, danced by Dartmouth High School senior, Rebecca Bier, as they compete for the soul of the Queen (ORR senior Sasha Nochimow) and King's (NBB ballet instructor, James Brown) daughter, Princess Aurora, danced by ORR senior Sofia Gabriel. When Aurora pricks her finger and Carabosse's curse is fulfilled, the royal court begins their hundred-year sleep. That is, until the dashing Prince (guest artist, Akulov) sees a vision of Aurora and begins his quest to break the curse, marry his true love, and, of course, live happily ever after. Featured dancers also include ORR senior Corvina Silva, as the Canari Fairy, and Bishop Stang senior, Kate Middleton, as a Lilac Fairy Attendant.

Ticket prices are $20 for premiere seating, $15 Adults, $10 Seniors and Students, and $8 Children 12 and under. Special group rates are available for non-profit organizations.

For over 20 years, the non-profit New Bedford Ballet has continued its mission of providing the South Coast region with the highest quality pre-professional classical ballet training and keeping the performance of classical ballet alive in our community. New Bedford Ballet Presents La Fille Mal Gardée

(NEW BEDFORD) The School of the New Bedford Ballet will be performing La Fille Mal Gardée ("The Unchaperoned Daughter") at the Zeiterion Theatre on Saturday, June 13th, at 2 PM and 8PM. This humorous, family-oriented ballet was originally created by French ballet master Jean Dauberval in 1789. Inspired by a quaint painting he viewed in a shop in Bordeaux, France, Dauberval's ballet has been enjoyed by audiences of all ages for over two centuries.

La Fille Mal Gardée was first restaged for New Bedford Ballet by Artistic Director, Shirley Kayne in 2001. The story centers around Lisette and Colas, whose desire to marry does not meet with the approval of Lisette's mother, Madame Simone. Madame Simone makes an arrangement with Thomas, a wealthy vineyard owner, for Lisette to marry his son, Alain. Alain's antics together with Madame Simone's unsuccessful attempts to keep Lisette and Colas apart, result in a delightful and humorous tale which has stood the test of time.

The cast includes New Bedford High School senior Shaharazad Arteaga, dancing the role of Lisette, and Fairhaven High School senior Sophia LeBlanc-Medeiros dancing the role of Madame Simone. Eivar Martinez, guest artist from Festival Ballet in Providence, will appear as Colas, and James Brown, Master Ballet Instructor at New Bedford Ballet, will be portraying Thomas. William Levasseur, a 2005 graduate of New Bedford Ballet, will reprise his role of Alain, which he danced previously in 2001. There are over 100 students from New Bedford Ballet in this production, ranging in age from 5 to 18 years; the youngest dancers are guaranteed to charm the audience as they portray lambs, chicks, cigales and mice.

Ticket prices are $20 for reserve seating, $15 General Admission, $10 Seniors and Students, $8 Children 12 and under, and a special discounted rate of $5 per ticket for groups of 10 or more.

This performance is sponsored by Hawthorn Medical Associates, and all proceeds support the New Bedford Ballet, a nonprofit organization. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & Open House

(NEW BEDFORD) The New Bedford Ballet (NBB) is pleased to announce the opening of their new studio at 2343 Purchase Street, New Bedford. Six months ago the New Bedford Ballet faced the challenge of finding a new location. Because of the hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of many donors, NBB now has a beautiful new space.

"We wanted to stay in New Bedford and we appreciate the help of all who made that possible," stated NBB Board President Terri deMedeiros. "Our students and their families love the new location and we want to invite the community to our ribbon cutting and open house so they can share in the celebration." We would especially like to thank our new landlord, Henry Wainer, for his assistance and generosity, and South Coast Moving & Storage for their expert and careful help with the move.

The ribbon cutting ceremony and open house will take place at 2343 Purchase St., New Bedford, on Saturday, January 31, from 2 to 6pm. Light refreshments will be served and special performances by our students will be presented throughout the afternoon.
