New Bedford Ballet Takes Flight with Peter Pan

The world’s most popular symbol of everlasting youth, Peter Pan, will be soaring to new heights at the Zeiterion Theatre on Saturday, June 11, at 2pm and 8pm.  Based on J.M. Barrie’s timeless story, New Bedford Ballet’s production of Peter Pan will feature choreography by artistic director Rebecca Waskiel-Marchesseault and ballet masters James Brown and Lauren Knightly. Dancers, ages 5 to 18 years old, including four graduating seniors, together with charming costumes, captivating music and colorful sets, will create a storybook world of pirates, mermaids, and a myriad of other Neverland characters.

Old Rochester Regional High School senior Bailey Sweet will capture Peter’s fearlessness and youthful playfulness, as she takes the Darling children on a journey past the “second star and straight on ‘til morning.” Dartmouth High School senior Maddison Medeiros will dance the part of the effervescent and clever Tinker Bell; ORRHS senior Annie Tucker will portray the beloved Wendy; and Jessica Silva, Dartmouth High School senior, will dance the part of the sophisticated and maternal Mrs. Darling. All of them will bring these iconic characters to life through the grace and beauty of the art of ballet.  The Neverland experience will, of course, also include encounters with the sinister Captain Hook, who will be danced by Vincent Brewer, guest artist from Dayton Ballet.  Mr. Brewer will surely amaze audience members, as he combines technical precision with a dramatic flair. Working with Mr. Brewer as part of this full-length ballet has been a privilege for all the dancers.

New Bedford Ballet’s magical production will clearly pay homage to Barrie’s early 20th century play and novel, as it includes heart-warming characters, action-packed battles, and a large dose of nostalgia. Partaking in this adventure to the “place where dreams are born” is guaranteed to bring joy and wonderment to the young and previously young alike.
