A New England Nutcracker

An Homage to Our Region’s Past

(New Bedford) A city rich in American history, New Bedford is also a city with its own performing arts treasures.  This holiday season New Bedford Ballet will take you on a journey back in time to the 1850s, a time when The Whaling City prospered as its whale oil lit up the world. A New England Nutcracker will be performed December 5th through the 13th at the NBB Community Theatre, 2343 Purchase St. in New Bedford.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score, the Youth Ballet will transport you to a lush holiday party where Herman Melville is a guest at the home of Captain Ephraim Williams.  To the delight of the revelers, the Captain arrives home from a whaling trip in the midst of the merriment. He brings with him not only dancing animals from around the globe but tales of people from distant, exotic lands.   After receiving a nutcracker that her father purchased during his travels, Ephraim’s daughter, Mary, drifts off to sleep.  The audience will accompany Mary on a magical dream, as she witnesses a battle with the Mouse Queen, sails through a flurry of Snowflakes, and finally arrives in the Land of Sweets, where she is entertained by dancers from all the exciting places described by her father.  This unique and charming story is guaranteed to leave the audience filled with the warmth of the holiday spirit.

This original adaptation of the traditional Nutcracker ballet was created by Rebecca Waskiel-Marchesseault, Director of the New Bedford Ballet, and features choreography by Ms. Waskiel, Erin Petitjean Allen, James Brown and Lauren Knightly.  The Youth Ballet’s production is a unique, shortened ballet, with narration, making it ideal for children of all ages.
